Why We Save Every Tax Export (And Nobody Else Does)

Every tax export you download is automatically saved with a timestamp and integrity check. If the IRS audits you years later, you will have the exact file you filed — not a regenerated guess.

You spend hours classifying transactions, picking the right cost basis method, and generating your Form 8949. You download the file, hand it to your CPA or upload it to TurboTax, and file your return. Done.

Then two years later, the IRS sends a notice. They want to see your records. You log back into your crypto tax tool, hit "export" again, and... the numbers are different. You added new wallets since then. You reclassified a few transactions. The report that gets generated today is not the report you filed two years ago.

This is a real problem, and no major crypto tax platform currently solves it.

The Regeneration Problem

Many crypto tax tools use a regenerate-on-demand approach. When you click "download," they build a fresh report from your current data. There is no saved copy of what you previously exported. If your data has changed since you filed, the regenerated report will not match what you submitted to the IRS.

That mismatch can turn a routine audit into a serious headache. You are left trying to explain why the numbers on your Form 8949 do not match the numbers your own tax tool produces. The IRS does not care that you added a wallet six months after filing. They care that the numbers do not match.

How Export History Works

Blockchain Smart Tax takes a different approach. Every time you download a tax export — whether it is Form 8949, a TurboTax TXF file, a TaxAct CSV, or any other format — we automatically save a copy on our servers. No extra steps required.

On the Tax Reports page, you will find a Download History tab showing every export you have ever generated. Each entry includes the metadata you would expect:

  • Export date and time — exactly when you downloaded the file
  • Tax year and format — which year and which output format (Form 8949, TurboTax, etc.)
  • Cost basis method — FIFO, LIFO, HIFO, or whichever method you used
  • Number of disposals, wallets, and transactions — a snapshot of the scope of your report
  • Total gain or loss — the bottom line from that export
  • File size and integrity hash — every file is verified with SHA-256 to prove it has not been tampered with

You can re-download any previous export at any time. You can also delete exports you no longer need. We store up to 100 exports per account, and if you approach that limit, the oldest exports are automatically removed (with a warning when you hit 95).

Why This Matters for IRS Audits

The IRS can audit crypto transactions going back six or more years. If you are selected for an audit in 2030 for your 2026 filing, you need to produce the exact documents you filed — not a fresh report generated from data that has been modified dozens of times since then.

With Export History, you have timestamped, integrity-verified copies of every report you generated. You can show the IRS exactly what you filed and when you generated it. That is a level of documentation most people do not have, and it can make the difference between a smooth audit and a prolonged dispute.

A Tool Your CPA Will Love

If you work with an accountant, Export History gives them a clear paper trail. They can see every export you downloaded, compare reports across tax years, and verify that what you filed matches what your tool produced. For amended returns, the comparison between the original and updated export is right there — no guessing, no recreating from memory.

For users who want the most comprehensive audit documentation possible, Export History pairs well with our Audit Defense Package, which bundles your complete transaction records, cost basis calculations, and supporting documentation into a single download.

Already Live

Export History is available now for all users on every plan. There is nothing to enable — just download a tax export and it will appear in your Download History tab automatically. If you have already generated exports before this feature launched, future exports will start building your history going forward.

Your tax records are too important to leave to regeneration. Create your free account and see Export History in action the next time you download a report.
